Alajuela

Cartago

Cartago

In Cartago province is the city of the same name, which was once the capital of Costa Rica. Although the capital has moved to San José, the city of Cartago is still very populous and important for the country. The Basilica of Los Angeles, located in the city, is the home of the Virgin of the Angels, very beloved Catholic figure in the country. Cartago also has important natural attractions, among them the Irazu Volcano and Turrialba Volcano. Heredia

Heredia

Heredia is one of the provinces with large urban population in the Central Valley. The main city of this province has the same name, Heredia. However, some others cities like Belen and San Joaquin are well known by travelers because of their proximity to the Juan Santamaria International Airport. This province has two major natural attractions, its mountains of great beauty and nice views of the Central Valley and similarly, many travelers visit the forests in its northern plains, being Sarapiquí a point of reference to visit that area. Limón

Tortuguero

Limón province stretches along all of the country's Caribbean coast. In this province you can find the ports of Limon and Moin, two of the most important ports in the country. A special feature of this province is that a large chunk of its population is of black ethnicity, which gives it a number of traditions and customs very different from the rest of the country. In this province the Tortuguero canals are known as one of the destinations that tourists do not want to miss. Puntarenas

Puntarenas is the largest province of Costa Rica and is also the one that has more miles of coastline. San José

City

The province of San José is mainly known because the city of the same name is the capital of Costa Rica. In this province live and work most of the country's population. Like any city around the world, many large residential areas (suburbs) have developed in this province. For example, southwest of the city you can be find Escazú, Santa Ana and Ciudad Colón, meanwhile east of the capital you can find San Pedro and Curridabat.
